Boots, Hats, and Guitars. Stars on the Bastion, a country music hoe-down like no other atop the mighty Bastion lookout in Wyndham WA was week 10 of Freshwater’s 52 Weeks of Adventure and a rockin good time!
Wyndham is Western Australia’s northern most town, just 100kms from Kununurra and nestled on the Cambridge Gulf. It has a long and fascinating history of indigenous culture, pioneering, and multiculturalism since its gold rush years. The town is a little quieter these days than its years through the gold rush and more recently the Wyndham meat works when it employed 1600 people per season! The port is still an operating port though, reliant on nickle and cattle export predominately as well as servicing the Kimberley Cruise Ships who start and end their cruise itineraries in Wyndham.
Wyndham is a quintessential Australian outback town, and there is no more fitting place to host a country music event like Stars on the Bastion. The Bastion lookout is also known as the Five Rivers Lookout and is where five significant Kimberley rivers meet the sea. It’s considered one of Australia’s greatest views and must be ticked off the list when visiting the Kimberley.
If you do find yourself in Wyndham or Kununurra in July when Stars on the Bastion is held you really should consider buying a ticket. The event has featured some country music greats over the years including Adam Brand, Rachel Dillon, Morgan Evans, Sara Storer, and this year was headlined by ‘The McClymonts’. Even if you’re not a country music fan, it’s a super fun night and as I said earlier a quintessential outback experience.
This year’s show was a sell-out. There are only 400 tickets released each year, and at $90 each include a 3 course meal and a brilliant night of entertainment. Buses are available from Kununurra if you’ve booked Kununurra accommodation.
